Petals in the Wind begins with the funeral of the man who took Chris, Cathy, and Carrie in. The funeral holds the symbolic petals in the wind that Cathy crushes as Cathy and Chris walk away. Carrie is hot the hardest by the loss of Paul, the man who saved them. In the book his death comes much later after he's taken in Chris, Cathy, and Carrie. He also had a more intimate relationship with Cathy that only Jenny knew about. Henny is the woman who found the children wandering after their escape from Foxworth Hall. She played the role of mother to the children and Paul adopted them. Chris went to school and became a doctor, following after their savior Paul. Cathy went on to become a stunning ballerina, Carrie is a shy wallflower and is sad all the time since the death of her twin Cory. Cathy contacts Corinne on the night of the funeral. Cathy is tormented with thoughts of Corinne, since she had never forgiven Corinne for all their suffering. Cathy tries to distract herself with her ballet. It is at her practice that she meets Julian, the son of her instructor. He is tall, dark haired, handsome...and trouble. Carrie is having trouble adjusting in school, she is often the victim of bullying. Chris is flourishing at his work/clinical for becoming a doctor. Meanwhile at the Foxworth Hall, Olivia is ailing from a stroke. She tries telling the nurse of Corinne' s crimes against her children. As it turns out it might not have been Olivia poisoning Chris, Cathy, Cory, and Carrie. Which just makes her seem as more of a monster.

Julian makes his way with Cathy, he manages to lure her away from her family to join him in NY. He seduces her and eventually makes her his wife. He is complicated, controlling, abusive, a drunk, selfish, and a philanderer. Corinne is busy living her life, driven to renovate Foxworth Hall while each of her surviving children deal with problems her abandonment and betrayal caused her them. Soon it becomes clear why Corinne want to renovate Foxworth Hall. She wants the attic and the guest room where her children stayed, to be closed off. She wants every trace of them to be hidden away. Meanwhile, Carrie is trying to find her place, and herself. So she moves to NY with Cathy and Julian. A indecent relationship forms between Carrie and Julian, which Chris happens to stumble upon on the night of Cathy's debut performance. Denying anything was happening between him and Carrie, Julian gets into a fight with Chris and then storms off. Cathy, chases after Julian to confront him about what happened. Julian gets in his car and storms off with Cathy. Its a confrontation from Julian to Cathy about her relationship with Chris. While Cathy confronts Julian about his relationship with Carrie. It is then that she revels that she is pregnant with his child, and they are slammed into by another car.

It is later shown that Cathy is teaching ballet to young girls. It is revealed that Cathy survived with her baby boy Jorey but Julian passed away. Since then Carrie has flowered into a beautiful young woman. She seems happier and even has a love interest with the pastor. The pastor later proposes to Carrie, Carrie doesn't want to make a decision until she has her mothers approval, so she goes to find her and tell her the news. Corinne, dismisses Carrie which leaves Carrie heartbroken. She then commits suicide by baking doughnuts and lacing them with arsenic. Chris and Cathy find Carrie's letters that have been returned by their mother, another emotional slap to them, which drove Carrie to kill herself in the same manner her twin Cory died.

Enraged and overcome with grief, Cathy is dead set on getting revenge. She wants their mother to pay for what was done to them while they were children and for the deaths of Corey and Carrie. Chris tells her she is on her own, he wants no part in being part of her quest for revenge. Cathy ignores him and goes on her quest to get revenge. She meets with her mother's current husband Bart Winslow. From what she learns from him, her grandmother is sick, her mother is alive and well, and Bart wants children but Corinne has refused him any. Cathy sets her sights on Bart, he goal is to seduce him and he is more than willing to be seduced.Bart becomes more and more distant from Corinne, leaving on frequent jobs. Making Corinne suspicious especially when she realizes Bart is leaving behind his wedding band and watch. Cathy is feeling lonely and lost at the idea of this being her first Christmas without Carrie, Chris getting married and all she has left is Jory. She seeks some kind of comfort in Foxworth Hall, she finds her grandmother Olivia who is now sick and dying. They have a confrontation, which only fuels Cathy on making an appearance at Corinne's party to show off Foxworth Hall. The confrontation between Corinne and Cathy is a humiliating event for Corinne, she is outed by her daughter and by her mother in front of all her friends. Corinne loses it and sets the house on fire.

Six years later we are shown Cathy, Chris, Jory, and unnamed boy at a picnic meanwhile Corinne appears to be in a mental institution.
